Rio Ferdinand is set to mark his eleven seasons as Manchester United player with his testimonial match against Sevilla on Friday. The experienced defender is better known for his calm and assured defending, but has often proved to be a clinical finisher when given the opportunity in front of goal. Here are three of Rio's best strikes in a United shirt.
3. Vs Liverpool (22nd January 2006)
The first goal on this list comes in the form of a last minute winner against bitter rivals, Liverpool. As the match approached the dying moments, deadlocked at 0-0, Ferdinand produced a bullet header from a Ryan Giggs free-kick to give United all three points.
2. Vs Swansea (12th May 2013)
This goal is one of Rio's most memorable goals due to the occasion it was scored. In Sir Alex Ferguson's last home game in charge, United were looking for a late winner against Swansea. The magical moment came when a loose ball dropped to Ferdinand in the box, allowing the English defender to fire home a sweet half volley.
1 Vs Liverpool (Again) 22nd October 2006
Scoring goals against Liverpool is always going to improve your United career, especially when they are quality strikes. This goal (Ferdinand's second against Liverpool), was the second in the match and proved that although Rio is a defender, he clearly has an eye for goal. Pulling the ball out of the sky and smashing it into the top corner with his left foot, Ferdinand helped United to secure another victory over their most bitter rivals.
One of the other most memorable/strange moments of Rio's United career, came when he found himself in goal for a Sulley Muntari penalty against Portsmouth. The central defender was forced to face the spot kick after Tomasz Kuszczak left the pitch, he almost saved it too!
