Most United fans would admit that Wayne Rooney remains the heart and soul of the Manchester United team. His recent absence from the Real Madrid clash caused more speculation about his United future. However, Sir Alex has moved to stop the rumours and gave "his word" that Rooney will still be a Red Devil next season. Here's 5 of our favourite Rooney goals for Manchester United, there are many to choose from....
5. Vs Athletic Bilbao, March 2012
Not the most important goal of Rooney's career, but one that is typical Wayne Rooney. In the dying seconds of a Europa League defeat to Athletic Bilbao, Rooney picks the ball up on the edge of the box, before cutting onto his right foot and smashing a shot into the top corner. This away goal gave United a lifeline, but it wasn't enough to progress.
4. Vs Portsmouth, January 2007
Another goal that shows the true quality of England's main striker came against Portsmouth in the FA cup. Rooney picks the ball up about 30 yards from goal before producing a brilliantly weighted chip shot over David James in the Portsmouth goal. We placed this goal at number 4 because of the unique finish that few players could pull off, and the perfect execution.
3. Vs Barcelona, May 2011
Rooney's goal against Barcelona in the 2011 Champions League Final makes number 3 on our list. Although it proved to be the only goal in a 3-1 defeat, the brilliant build-up and clinical finish put this goal as one of Rooney's best of all time. (skip to 3:03 for the Rooney goal)
2. Vs Newcastle, April 2005
This would easily make the number one spot, but we all know that's reserved for a extra special Manchester derby moment. Rooney himself claimed this was his best goal ever before his overhead kick against the noisy neighbours. United's current number 10 (wearing 8 at the time) was arguing with the referee for not giving a free-kick and took his anger out on the ball was a stunning volley from 30 yards.
1. Vs Manchester City, February 2011
This is easily the best goal that Wayne Rooney has ever scored, and he'll probably never score a better one. With all the talk about the balance of power in Manchester shifting to the blue side, the Manchester derby was deadlocked at 1-1, before a true moment of magic put the noisy neighbours "back in their place"...
